THE DERBY FLYER

An alternative voice – an independent weekly community journal, by email,  for the people of Derby

Volume 1 No. 24A (& e-DF1)                                             May 27, 2004

© Brennan Publications         £1 weekly email on subscription           ISSN 1743-2235

The Derby Flyer is the first of Brenmedia’s weekly email journals to go online.  Paid subscribers to the weekly email delivery will get it first  (by three days), to bring in the much-needed funds for running costs.  We are grateful to the small but faithful core of  paying subscribers since these two journals were launched in October 2003.  The Derby Guardian (for news and comment) is still delivered by email, on subscription.   This £1 a week (for each journal, in advance, minimum of 12 weeks) is considered an essential contribution by those who prefer a rational, alternative voice among the region’s media.   For details email brenmedia@btinternet.com-  Jim Brennan.

Lonny Wilsoncroft.   The funeral service for the popular city councillor, whose death after a long illness has brought tributes from many people and organisations, will be held at 1pm on June 2, at St Mary’s Church.  A tribute to Lonny appears in our Derby Guardian.

More election details for the city and Europe

We begin a series of profiles of Derby’s 17 wards.   Though a brief summary in each case, based on the last census returns, the statistics we have chosen should allay fears mischievously created by sensational reports about ethnic minorities.   Some are seeking to make this an election issue.  This is mainly and unsurprisingly on the far right, but both UKIP and BNP are claiming supporters from other parties.

The latest leaflet in Derby from UKIP is headlined: “Immigration to soar !” and says as a fact that “With the enlargement of the EU in May 2004, Britain will allow 73 million eastern European citizens the right of entry, despite our one million unemployed…”   A leaflet delivered in the city this week by the BNP was headlined: “Asylum is making Britain explode.”

The DET’s series of articles profiling the candidates in each ward has been a useful election guide for many years, and the current series is a firstclass job by reporter Daniel Bentley.   (The editor of Derby Flyer and Derby Guardian was involved with a similar series some years ago) Our aim here is to put the situation in perspective so far as one contentious issue is concerned.   Scroll down for Part 1.

News and comment can be found in our Derby Guardian.

We are updating our lists for the council and Euro elections, and the latest voting details.  See below, at the end of the list of council candidates, a note on the delay in printing the ballot papers.

More government departments, from the Prime Minister’s office down, are  included in our contacts lists, with phone numbers and web sites.   See also our events calendar, contacts lists for the city councillors and council directors, MPs  and MEPs, with their  local and Westminster phone numbers and emails, and contacts for local organisations.

Amendments and additions are welcomed.

The Derby Flyer ward profiles – Part 1

Council elections remind us of the identity of our own space in the city - the wards in which we live - and there may be some who are never aware of it.

As June 10 approaches we provide a reminder from the public record, with some of the statistics for the 17 wards based on the last census.   Details of religion and ethnicity are given here because they are the subject of debate in some wards during the campaign.   It will be helpful to some to find, for example, that the Muslim population of the city, 9,958, is only 4.5 per cent of the total population.

Here is Part 1, profiling the city, and Abbey and Allestree.   Part 2 follows in our next issue, and Part 3 in election week.

Election notes: Ballot papers were to have been sent out from May 26.   Royal Mail had told the council that it would have delivered all the papers by Friday, May 28.

A delay in printing the polling cards for the areas (including Derby) which are having all-postal elections, means a hold up of 48 hours, says Michael Foote, city election returning officer, and Derby returning officer for the Euro polls (being run for the East Midlands region  from Peterborough).   Because of the weekend and bank holiday Monday, the cards may not be received until Tuesday.   Electors have until 10pm on June 10 to deliver their cards

Any voter needing assistance can go to the Guildhall to get help on every day except Sunday from June 1 to 10.

The ballot papers must be received by the council by 10pm on June 10.   The votes for the city councillors will be counted immediately after that, and the results made known.

Votes for the European Parliament will be counted on Sunday, June 13, which is the polling day for the rest of Europe.   Those results will be published the next day.

Reports and comment on the city council elections will be found in the Derby Guardian.   Email editor@derbyguardian.com
