 World Association of Press Councils

We have been asked to retain the following conference information for a time because of significant developments in the pipeline, including the European grouping of Press Councils. Reports of the first Oceania Regional Conference of the World Association of Press Councils (WAPC) at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia on 22-23 June, 2000, are now on the web site of the Australian Press Council, , which sponsored the conference.

The conference was opened by the Premier of Queensland, Peter Beatttie, and the more than 90 delegates were welcomed by Professor Dennis Pearce, chairman of the Australian Press Council. The president of the WAPC, and chairman of the Indian Press Council, Mr Justice P.B. Sawant, reminded delegates that the association's principal object was to promote a free and responsible press throughout the world.
Two new members were admitted: the Press Ombudsman of South Africa, Mr Ed Linington, and the Kibris Turkish Press Council. Professor Salvador Lozada, of Argentina, reported a proposal to establish a single press council for the five Mercosur countries in South America.
A draft report on a possible transnational complaints mechanism was tabled, to be circulated to members for comment. It suggests practical ways for handling complaints concerning transnational or international media.
Information can be obtained from the Australian Press Council, Level 3, 149 Castlereagh Street, Sydney, NSW 2000, Australia.
