Intelligence Squared and the Daily Mail
April 24. The Intelligence Squared series of debates, at the Royal Geographical Society, London. Debate: The trouble with this country is the Daily Mail. Speakers include Polly Toynbee, Mary Ann Sieghart, and Peter Oborne. Chairman, Richard Lindley. A programme of regular seminars is being arranged, following the launch meeting on March 21, at the Guardian Newsroom Centre, Farringdon Road, London, when an advisory panel was formed. A successful seminar was held at the same venue on March 26, to coincide with the launching of a book by Ian Hargreaves, titled Journalism: Truth or Dare (OUP). July 2-6. Annual conference of the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors (ISWNE) will be held in Galway, Ireland. The society is based in the United States. The conference host will be David Burke, proprietor and editor of the weekly paper in his home town, Tuam - a role held in common with most of his American counterparts. Details available from
