News agencies meeting in Tehran

Tehran, October  29, IRNA .

From the Islamic Republic News Agency managing director, Jalal Fayyazi,  comes news that  the 28th session of the executive committee of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies is to be held in Tehran on November 11-15.

The new IRNA chief said that OANA's editorial and technical group will also hold its 22nd meeting in the Iranian capital simultaneous with the executive committee session.

The meetings are aimed at exchanging news and information and promoting regional news cooperation among member states.  Mr Fayyazi said  OANA has 39 news agencies from 34 regional states as its members.  With a total population of four billion, they account for 56 percent of the world's gross domestic product and half of global total trade turnover.

Referring to the increasing propaganda against the world of Islam, Mr Fayyazi said strengthening of regional cooperation is the best way of countering one-sided journalism.

He said that IRNA will play a more active role in news and information dissemination and thereby increase its standing in the field.

OANA was founded in 1961 to promote cooperation in professional matters and to undertake mutual exchange of news, features, etc, among news agencies of Asia and the Pacific.
