Japan Society faces radical changes in constitution
The result of a wide-ranging review of the constitution of the Japan Society will be discussed at the annual meeting, to be held in the ballroom of the Japanese Embassy, Piccadilly, London, at 6pm on June 30. Radical changes include the axing of the executive committee, and the concentration of powers in the hands of the council. That body is to be slimmed down to no fewer than nine and no more than 20 members.
The report, already sent to members, was prepared by a working party comprising Sir John Whitehead, Mike Isherwood, Yuuichiro Nakajima, Christopher Purvis, Barry Thomas, Richard Jones, and Robert Guy as secretary. The president will be ex-officio the Ambassador. Chairmen and chairwomen will serve a maximum of six years.
The council will approve the annual budget, and set the types and subscription rates of membership. For further details apply to info@japansociety.org.uk Web site http://www.japansociety.org.uk
Reception for new Ambassador
A reception for the next Ambassador to Japan, Stephen Gomersall, is to be held at the Japanese Embassy on July 6. Mr Gomersall is to succeed Sir David Wright.
He entered the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in 1970, and has served at the United Nations, and twice in Tokyo and Washington. He and his wife, Lydia, met in Tokyo, and have three children. Mrs Gomersall was until recently the director of publicity for the Japan Society of New York.
Members of the newly-formed Japan British Society of Aomori are also expected to be at the reception.
