Fined editors defended by Society
The Society of Editors has defended two editors fined for contravening a court order banning identification of a boy excluded from school.
Simon Bradshaw, Brighton Evening Argus, and David Briffet, West Sussex County Times, were fined £2,500 each and ordered to pay £1,095 costs between them.
Bob Satchwell, director of the Society of Editors, said the court's decision and magistrates' comments implied that editors did not take sufficient care. He said: "Cases involving children are subject to the utmost care at every stage of the editorial process."
